After 45 years Cracovia qualified to the semi-final of the Cup of Poland!
Cracovia is recently quiet successful. The hockey team won the bronze-medal of the 2007 Championship, while the footballers first crushed Lech Poznań 3-0 in a league game and later qualified to the semi-final of the Cup of Poland winning against Radomiak Radom 4-1 on the aggregate.
Cracovia hockey team beat Stoczniowiec Gdańsk in the fourth game of the best-of-five bronze medal series 8:4. This massive away victory, though secured in the last period only, gave us the bronze medal of the 2007 Championship. This is a big success of the club, but many are disappointed, as they had been counting for the gold. Anyhow, one must not forget that Pasy lost the semifinal after penalty shootout in the seventh game. What is more, this is the first time since the 40s when Cracovia made it to the top-three during three consecutive years. Now it is time to sign prolong contracts with our key players and sign some new players, including potential stars from abroad. Our best player Leszek Laszkiewicz already signed the contract for the forthcoming season, as well as some other players who had been playing well during the last season.
The hockey is over, so football is now the essence of Cracovia fans’ lifes. After a fortnight-long break for the Euro’08 Qualifiers the league resumed the games. The break was beneficial for Cracovia, as the players had time to recover from flu epidemic which weakened Pasy in the last game against Zagłębie Lubin (2-4). Now it was Lech Poznań who came to Kałuży. Our befriended club is underachieving this season, as 8th position in the league is obviously far below expectations. On Friday Pasy played a very good game and worsened Lech’s situation. In the first half the team from Poznań had only one good chance, but Kikut’s low and tricky shot was saved by Cabaj. Later Cracovia dominated. First Bania intercepted the ball and initiated a swift counter attack which was spoiled by Bojarski’s awkward shot after a clumsy one-two with Giza. But soon Bojarski rehabilitated, as in 23rd minute his perfect long cross allowed Pawlusiński to score with a thunderous first-time volley strike into the low corner. This was another spectacular goal of our winger. Just a few minutes later he could double his tally, but after a solo run he hit the post and the second try tit the side-netting. In the last minute of the first half Pawlusiński centered the ball to the far post, where Bojarski headed it to Bania whose shot was instinctively saved by Kotorowski. It was a very good half for Pasy, but still there was more to come. Three minutes into the second half Cracovia doubled her lead when Nowak scored after Wacek’s good throw-in and Wiśniewski’s fantastic header. From now on Pasy were clearly in control of the game; Lech’s few long shots were coolly saved by Cabaj. In 70th minute the game was practically over, as Bania showed good skills in the penalty area, skipped past two defenders and passed the ball to Bojarski, who could not have dreamt of an easier position to score. Some five minutes before the final whistle Giza passed a fine through ball to Bojarski, who was fouled in the penalty area. It was Bojarski who tried the penalty, but his shot was saved by Kotorowski, as was Bania’s second try off the rebound. This failure did not spoil the general impression that this was a great performance by Cracovia.
On Tuesday, April 3rd Cracovia won the Polish Cup quarter-final 2nd leg game against Radomiak Radom 1:0 and qualified to the semi-final. The game was a poor show, as Pasy won the first away-game 3-1 and confidently controlled the game, despite playing with a rather reserve line-up. The only goal of the game was scored in 75th minute, when after a dynamic Baster was fouled in the penalty area run and Giza scored from the spot. Therefore Cracovia made it to the semi-final of the Polish Cup, the stage Pasy so far reached only once, in 1962.
